This work involved replacing the entire bathroom floor (down to earth level) due to it being water-damaged/rotten. This had to be done before the tiling could even begin. New brick piers and tanalised joists were installed with a new 22mm moisture-resistant chipboard floor. The new flooring was made up of interlocking boards secured properly at 200mm centres with 50mm screws.

With a good background for the tiles, and the floor joists properly supported, this reduces any movements in the floor. However, the chipboard needs to be primed with diluted PVA (3:1 water:pva mix). The floor was primed twice and the new tiles installed with both flexible adhesive and flexible grout to allow movement in the floor without the joints or tiles breaking. Normally, if tiling over wooden floors (floorboards) we would recommend at least 12mm marine ply be installed under the tiles to reduce movement also.

The finished tiles were sandstone effect 33x33cm ceramic tiles with 4mm grout joint lines. The tiles were non-slip, so ideal for a bathroom.

Key Stages

  • Renewal of wooden floor with moisture-resistant (P5) chipboard
  • Securing and sealing the floor properly (diluted PVA)
  • Applying the new tiles with flexible adhesive whilst the boards are still tacky
  • Once properly set, the tiles are grouted with a flexible grout
  • Excess grout is removed with a damp sponge (3 passovers with clean water each time)
  • Once dried, the grout residue is cleaned off the tiles are they are buffed with a soft cloth.
